  Just make your Putts

I have enjoyed watching some great golf these past few weeks. To watch Lucas Glover win for the first time since his US Open win in 2009 was awesome. Good job Lucas! Second to see David Toms play two weeks of great golf was especially good for a guy that has had injury setbacks in recent years. His one comment having to do with his son motivating him to get out to the golf course and practice was special. What a great game, a Dad 44 and on the back side of his PGA Career has his son nagging him to play since his son has caught the golf bug. Dad gets motivated from his son’s love for the game and goes out to rack up a 1st and 2nd in two weeks, is there another sport like golf? Having a 15 year old son myself I can understand how special that moment was for the both of them.

Did you notice the one common thread amongst all these winners in the last 3 weeks? NBC’s Johnny Miller and Dan Hicks pontificated about a new tide as to why there were so many playoffs since Augusta. Maybe it is because Tiger is out and “Phil not winning at all”. Johnny, check your facts Phil won the week before Augusta. It was only a few months ago that the pundits were identifying the new breed of golfers and the new era in golf. Come on guys didn’t Watson’s performance at Turnberry prove that golf can be played competitively by all ages. Ok I’ll grant you if the golf course is stretched to 7700 yards and wet the young long hitters have an advantage.

Golf is great game because of the putter, yes the great equalizer. Look at David Toms’ loss in a playoff at The Players, it was his putting on the first playoff hole that cost him. Toms hit the intimidating island green with the tournament on the line, he even put the ball inside his opponent the eventual winner K.J. Choi age 41.  It was his putter that could not master the 17th green.

Glover the week before made everything down the stretch to win. Toms wins at Colonial because he made his putts and not to mention an 83 yard holed wedge, those always help. What has hurt Tiger of late?  Although swing changes and injuries have not helped, the reality it has been his in ability to get the ball in the hole with his putter. Hogan, Palmer, Watson etc all saw their careers slow down because of the putter.

Players win on tour because they putt lights out, they hit great shots but it all comes down to making putts. So the next time you hear the experts drawing conclusions that are made for TV, remember the simple truth about golf. The guy that makes his putts has the best chance of winning. That would be a pretty boring way to open up the telecast but is the truth. As golfers we all know how simple the game is….hit it, find it, hit again and get the ball in the hole.
